Why two discounts never add up

A 30% sale followed by an extra 20% at checkout is not 50% off. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the real saving is 44%. Stores lean on this because the stacked headline sounds larger than it is. The calculator shows the effective discount so you can compare offers on equal terms.

Check the price, not the percentage

Marked down from an inflated original is the oldest trick in retail. Before trusting a large percent, search the same model elsewhere and compare the cash price. A 60% discount on a padded list price can still be more expensive than a 20% discount at an honest shop.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 30% off a price?

Multiply the price by 0.70, or enter the price and 30 above. The calculator also shows the exact amount you save.

How do stacked discounts work?

The second percentage is applied to the price after the first reduction, never to the original price. The tool shows both steps.

Does it include tax?

No. Use the sales tax calculator if you need to add VAT, GST or sales tax on top of the discounted price.
